Using Essential Oils For Pest Control

Essential oils are commonly used to inspire health and well being in humans, but they can also be used to control unwanted pests. has reported on effectively controlling insects in the garden with essential oils. After you've called companies like Desert Pest Control, you can use essential oils to get rid of critters that have invaded your home while you're waiting.

There's very little that's quite so repulsive as a parade of ants marching into your kitchen after a rain. You can use tea tree essential oil to chase ants away from your home and keep them from coming back.

Start by putting 1/4 cup of water in a spray bottle. Add 1/4 cup of vodka to keep the solution mixed. Then add 20 drops of tea tree oil and shake well. You can also include 5-10 drops of any citrus essential oil like orange, lemon or grapefruit. These oils help to destroy the scent trails ants leave behind for each other.

Spray the mixture on baseboards and around doorways or other areas where you think ants are entering your home. You can also soak cotton balls in the mixture and place them in cabinets and around the sink.

Peppermint oil can be very useful in getting rid of mice and other rodents. No one knows why mice hate the smell of peppermint, but they do hate it. Mix a cup of water with about 20 drops of peppermint oil and spray daily along the paths mice are taking in your home. You will know these paths by the trail of droppings your rodent guests leave behind.

You can also spray peppermint oil and water in areas where you think mice may be entering.

Citrus oils are the key to keeping spiders away. Make a mix out of one cup of warm water, a squirt of dish soap, 1/4 cup vinegar and 10 drops of orange, lemon or grapefruit oil. Spray this mixture on doorways and in other areas where spiders appear in your home.

Pigeons are some of the hardest critters to repel. If you have a problem with pigeons on your windowsills or in other areas of your property, you can make a pigeon potion with peppermint oil and lemon oil.

Mix 1/4 cup vinegar with 1/4 cup water in a jar. Add 7 drops of lemon oil and 7 drops of peppermint oil. Soak cotton balls in the mixture and then place the cotton balls anywhere pigeons are a problem. Pigeons hate the smell of lemon and peppermint and will find someplace else to hang out.

Bed Bugs

Combat bed bugs with clove oil. Mix 1/4 cup of water with 15 drops of clove oil in a spray bottle. Spray liberally on any mattresses and carpet you think might be infested.

You can also add clove oil to your wash when you launder your sheets, pillow cases and other bedding. Spray the clove oil mix on pillow cases and sheets at least once a day for about five days or until the signs of bed bugs have disappeared.

To treat bed bug bites, mix a few drops of lavender oil with a carrier oil like almond oil or grape seed oil. Apply this once a day to the area that was bitten.
